Book Review

Ninja kitten is like the unexpected guest that suddenly stops by to visit, expect in my case, she is a “virtual” visitor so it doesn’t matter that my house may be a bit untidy when she pops in to my blog.  Ninja kitten randomly pops in and leaves me a comment suggesting a book to read.  She has not let me down yet!  She most recently suggested that I read The girl who circumnavigated fairyland in a ship of her own making – this title definitely lives up to all the hype in the reviews.  Like other reviewers have already said, the book is for kids and adults alike (it is officially a kids book) and the author’s story could be compared to a mix between the Wizard of Oz & Alice and Wonderland.  The book is utterly fantastic.  I adored it.  And I have a “P.S.” edition of sorts and I swooned for the interview with the author as I could relate to many of her life experiences.  And “The girl who…” is just part 1 in a series of probably 2 or 3 more books.  #2, The girl who fell beneath fairyland and led the revels there,  is scheduled to be released on October 2!  However, if you are in the mood for something a bit more adult and a bit darker at times (although still without any explicit language or inappropriate scenes) try the author’s two part series The orphan’s tales:  In the night garden and The orphan’s tales:  In the cities of coin and spice – I’ve read both and they are fantastic.  And if you are wondering what I’m reading next…… The Princess Bride.

  1. You have to love that cover!!

  2. Those books sound interesting and entertaining; adding them to my To Read list. Thanks!

  3. There is almost nothing more delightful in life than being known as someone with the ability to recommend a good book. To add to all of this, be aware that Valente is herself quite wonderful as you alluded to above. Read her points on why this book is not too intelligent for your children. http://www.catherynnemvalente.com/2012/05/too-smart-for-kids-a-promise-to-the-readers-of-fairyland/

  4. @kitten, yes you have recommended great books to me! not sure if I have returned the favor or not.

Thanks for sharing that link, 100% awesome-ness. I adore her even more now.

I think I might need to gather up a pile of my favorite books and snap a pic of the spines so I can share all the fantastic titles with everyone, and by everyone I probably mean the few people that check in on my blog regularly ;) Are there more of you out there?

  5. Unfortunately, I’ve read most of the books you’ve recced in my preferred genres, but they are ones I’ve really enjoyed. However, you introduced me to Valente and that made me read this book and for that, I’m forever grateful. I probably put this book in my top five of children’s books, which is a pretty big honor for me. :D I would love to see all of your favorite books.

  6. *blush* thanks for the compliment! i will definitely post some fave book pics soon. perhaps over the weekend…..
