Book Review: Land of the Painted Caves

I was so excited when I heard Jean M. Auel was publishing her sixth and final book in the Earth Children Series:  Land of the Painted Caves.  Sadly, my excitement quickly turned to boredom as I began reading the book.  Folks, I am 350+ pages into this book, and sadly, very sadly, I am giving up – it doesn’t even matter to me how the story will wrap up.  This book is DULL!  I can’t even begin to describe how disappointed I feel as   I loved The Clan of the Cave Bear and the other 4 books in the series.  Granted, I was probably in late middle school or early high school when I read those books, and I’m older and a different person now, but everyone always loves a good story and Land of the Painted Caves is not a good story.  LOTPC lacks everything that the previous 5 books had:  rich descriptions of the environment, the people, the daily activities, a page turning plot.  With the previous five books in this series, I truly felt I was escaping to another place and time,  could get lost in the story, and cared about what happened to the characters.  I am sad to say that I do not recommend LOTPC — just enjoy the good memories you have from her other five books.

  1. What a huge bummer that the finale is such a let down. You may be older but you’d still expect to find yourself wanting to read on to find out the conclusion especially after 5 other books in the series.
I actually never finished the 4th Twilight book (big Twilight geek here) because it got wierd. They often either go wierd or try to fit too much into the last one. :-(

  2. I never read any of the Twilight books, but I can certainly share your disappointment in having the final book be such a bummer.

There are tons of negative reviews on bn.com I wasn’t even halfway through the book when I gave up, I still had 400+ pages to keep on trying to plow through. I returned the book to the store.

I really think it is stinky how the book is so bad yet the author is still going to reap profits :(

  3. I read the entire thing and the ending was horrible!

  4. sorry to hear that, I ended up googling “spoil alert” so I could find out how it ended, it sounded horrible! I have no idea what happened with this particular title, I really really enjoyed all the other books in this series.
