Stinky & Romantic Anniversary Day

So our anniversary morning had a bit of a stinky rather than romantic start.  We started out the day by taking a nice leisurely family stroll through the neighborhood.  Upon returning home, Benjamin went to the back door, signaling he wanted to go outside in the yard and hang out.  So out he went, we left the back door open and got a nice breeze through the screen door.  Shortly thereafter, we took a peek outside to check on him and noticed he was intently nibbling on something.  We figured it was a grass clod (Benjamin’s own version of beef jerky we like to say) from when hubby mowed the lawn.  But then the worst stinkiest thing happened.  Benjamin did this funny kneeling thing and smeared his head and neck repeatedly into the ground!  If you are a dog owner, you know what this means.  It means the dog found something absolutely delightful (translation, disgusting) and wanted to wear/smell like whatever it was.  Jason started yelling “no, no, no” and ran outside and herded him inside by touching him as gingerly as possible using his collar.  I’ll spare y’all the stinky details, but let’s just say I dry heaved several times while washing him.  I wore my goggles while bathing him, I have no idea why, as it was more my nose that needed protection from the stink!  Hubby came in to check on us wearing one of his fancy ventilator nose/mouth masks!  Oh we both looked so crazy!  That’s Benjamin below looking super pitiful after his super duper deep cleaning bath as I thoroughly soaped him up twice rather than just once.  Then Jason gave the bathroom a deep clean.  And then we decided that even though we were going to go out to dinner for our anniversary, that we just earned ourselves an out to lunch date too.

Afterwards we were able to slighly laugh about it.  I mean I suppose this is what having a kid is like.  Everything is going great, and then wham, the diaper fails or somehow the baby gets poop up to its neck (friends have told us this happens, it is a mystery!).  Thankfully Benjamin has done this stinky smearing thing less times than I can count on one hand during his 8 years of life, but it is weird that he does it.  I say weird because Benjamin can be a bit prissy sometimes.  Like if it’s been raining and there is a big puddle between the sidewalk crossings, he will go out of his way to walk around the puddle rather than walking through it or trying to leap over it as I suppose he doesn’t want to get his feet wet.  Well if takes care to keep his feet dry why on earth would he want to smell so darn stinky!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!!?  Ah well , I suppose we will never know.

But now on to the romantic time.  We did have a very nice anniversary evening.  UGA had an away football game so downtown was pleasantly uncrowded and parking was not difficult.  The weather was nice so we walked around a bit before heading  to the restaurant.  Downtown has changed a lot since both of went to school at UGA.  I came to Athens in 1995, but hubby was raised here, and at that time, downtown was a really good mix of funky restaurants, retail shops, and bars.  Now, sadly, there seems to be too many bars, and not enough stuff to “do” in an afternoon or early evening.  But anyway, below is where we bought our wedding rings!

A super cute baby/toddler UGA overall outfit that caught my eye — and no I’m not pregnant ;)

A crazy cool day-of-the-week moustache that caught my eye in the window!

We had dinner at speakeasy.  It’s where we went on our 1st date.  It’s a tapa restaurant so you get to order a few, or many, small to medium sized portions and get to eat a little bit of everything!

Pictures of our food.  I took the picture “late” each time, meaning that we had already nibbled some of the food!

Cheese plate

Baked oysters for hubby.

Fried asparagus with roasted red pepper sauce.

Tenderloin kebabs.

Gnocchi with sausage.

And that was our day!

  1. WAIT WAIT! When was your anniversary!? On Saturday?! That was our sixth anniversary for my husband and I! Congrats and much happiness. :) I’m glad to see it sounded like a good time.

  2. Happy anniversary! Oh that Benjamin story made me laugh, sorry! He has the timing of a child as well as the ability to get dirty. I don’t know how they know that today is the ‘best’ day to get poopy and yukky but they know!

  3. Our dogs like to rub all over dead worms or any other dead thing they find in the backyard — oh, the funk is horrible!! For having such sensitive noses, it amazes me they are okay walking around with that stink on themselves (but maybe they don’t find the odor P-U-y like we do).

So Benjamin had a spa day to celebrate your anniversary :) .

LOL, love the package of fake mustaches!!!

  4. The joys of dog ownership! I won’t share any of my own stinky dog stories, but I do understand! Sounds like the anniversary definitely got much better, you’re making me hungry early this morning with all those yummy food pics. ;)

  5. Tummy growling!

  6. @kitten, yup 9-25! happy belated anniversary to you!!! i hope y’all had a nice day too and had no stinkiness!

@lovestitches, yes, it is a bit of a funny story, i’m able to laugh at in now, but when i was dry heaving it was not very funny ;)

@stitchymom, exactly! dogs’ noses are super powerful so i can’t even imagine what that funk would smell like to them?!

@barncat1, yes the anniversary day thankfully got better, i was a bit worried, i mean the day started out quite off, but the spotaneous lunch date was real treat and got the focus back on us and off the dog ;)

  7. @modern ma’am, you left a comment while i was replying to the others ;) yes, the food was quite delicious! it’s a great restaurant and the service is really good too!

  8. I think Ben was a bit jealous that this time was not all about him and he acted up a bit to get your attention ;-) .
You had a lovely Anniversary lunch ! Everything looks delicious !

  9. Thankfully, Ben doesn’t do stinky things (or destructive things) for attention. I think whatever that stinky stuff was, to Benjamin it smelled delicious, so he just rolled all over in it. Yuck!!! Usually when Ben is craving attention he will get a squeaky toy and come find us ;)
