Getting a head start on Thanksgiving

We’re only just one week into November, and yet I’m stocking up on Thanksgiving supplies like the stores are going to run out.  Well actually, some very popular food items will disappear as Thanksgiving Day approaches.  One year, a few days before the holiday, I remember our Publix ran out of the big cartons of organic chicken broth and those cute little cans of solid jellied cranberry sauce which I loooove so much — I love how the solid cranberry jellied mass slides out of the can and I love that the can’s ribbed markings imprint themselves to the solid mass of cranberry jelly which is a very helpful guide for cutting even slices ;)   But I digress…

Last Saturday, I was psyched (goodness, I can’t believe I just used the word ‘pysched’ about my grocery store trip!) that I bought the 2nd to last can of Libby’s canned pumpkin.  So of course when I saw a freshly stocked display of holiday foods, I plunked another can of Libby’s canned pumpkin in my cart.  I also bought another litttle can of jellied cranberry sauce.  I do make a big batch of cranberry chutney from scratch with fresh cranberries, apples, raisins, among other things, but I still dig on the canned stuff.  I also love to bake with fresh cranberries throughout the year as well, mostly muffins and breads, so  I will stock up on bags of cranberries since they are only sold during the holiday season and after that, no more until next year.

Anybody else stock up on their favorite Thanksgiving Day food items early in case the stores sell out or am I the only kookie one?!

  1. Glad to hear the love for canned cranberry sauce doesn’t start and stop with me. According to my husband, it’s the most disgusting stuff on Earth. I think it’s delightful!

  2. I tend to make sure I have peas and greens for New Years as the stores tend to run out of those also.

  3. No, I haven’t shopped ahead of Thanksgiving in previous years, but mainly because I have worked/ travelled a lot in November the last few years. This year I will probably get fresh green beans ASAP, as I recall not having good choices closer to the big day.

  4. I don’t stock up, though it would probably be smart if I did! We split everything up at Thanksgiving – my parents take care of the turkey, my inlaws bring dressing and rolls, and I tend to handle veggie sides, like mashed potatoes and green beans. As long as we go out a couple of days before Turkey Day, I’m OK.

I did have to go out last minute for vinegar one year, the night before Thanksgiving. NEVER AGAIN will I hit the store at the last minute – it was INSANE.

My SIL brings a cranberry salad dish with cream cheese and nuts between slices of canned cranberry. It’s delicious.

  5. I don’t have any meals for pretty much the whole Thanksgiving weekend at my own house, so I have to wait till everyone tells me what to bring to all the “get togethers” before I can even shop. Hopefully no shortages around here!

  6. @kitten, yay glad to hear you like it too! my hubby doesn’t like the canned stuff either but i think it is divine and of course brings back memories of thanksgivings when i was younger.

@kitchenvixatl, good point about the new year’s eve supplies. when i was a little kid, our neighbor would give all us kids little pink peppermint pigs!

@antoinette, yes i am a selective green bean picker. i like to get the nice bright green ones without any blemishes, the pickins’ do get quite slim as thanksgiving day approaches.

@tnemily, i also went to the grocery store on thanksgiving eve to pick up one little thing (i forget what it was) and yes, the grocery store was crazy crowded. suprisingly, many many people had full buggies with all their thanksgiving goodies so maybe for some families its tradition to shop last minute?!
Your SIL’s cranberry salad dish sounds yum!

@lisa, wow so it sounds like your family stretches out the thanksgiving season over the long weekend, that is quite nice!
