goodies from joann’s sale

The JoAnn’s sale started today and of course I was there with a couple of coupons and a lovely 10% total purchase coupon ;)   I stocked up on embroidery floss, and have a picture of my lovely new flosses below.  I also bought “refills” of colors I use often.  It’s funny that when floss goes on sale I buy some new colors and “refills” of colors I use often, but yet, when stitching, I still mostly stick to my favorite floss colors.  What about y’all?  Do you try to use new colors for every project or stick to your faves?

But it will be a lovely evening tonight.  The Fashion Show comes on and I plan to wind my new  flosses while watching ;)   And as side note, did y’all catch the new episode that aired last night?!  I had no idea BRAVO was going to air a bonus new episode on a different day than usual, and thankfully saw the little “coming up next” icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen while flipping around last night.

I also picked a McCalls skirt pattern, M3341, for 99 cents.  I do have the Sew What Skirts book, and while it talks about how to sew darts, it really doesn’t tell you where to place them on your pattern.  So I thought it would be helpful to have a proper pattern as a guide, but seriously folks, now that I have the commercial pattern, this is probably what I am going to use when it comes time to sew.  This pattern is so awesome because it only uses 1 yard of fabric for view C & D!  Which is awesome because now when I see fabric I like, it won’t hurt the wallet to buy the fabric to make the skirt!  I think it is good to have M3341 on handbecause the other McCalls skirt pattern I bought have pleatdetails and such, which are lovely, but some patterns on fabrics aren’t suited to pleating, and this new pattern I purchased, M3341, will be great for those types of fabrics.  YAY!

I am also excited about an embroidery project that isn’t even a WIP yet.  I just can’t help thinking about this cute mouse pattern that flickr member Bunsakura shared.  She will defiinitely be stitched soon.  Once I decide what color I will stitch her dress in, I would like to get coordinating ribbon to stitch along the hem of the towel to jazz up the plain ol white towel a bit.  And speaking of ribbon, I bought a nice roll of blue ribbon at JoAnns so I can make my own blue stripey towels — myfirstbambina bought the blue stripey towels from Colonial Patterns and the blue bled a bit when she washed them :(   I’m making my own blue stripey towels because I’ve had it stuck in my head that I must stitch the cute Dutch girl pattern that barncat1 sent me on blue stripey towels!  The ribbon is polyester, do I need to soak it in the sink in hot water to allow for any shrinkage so there isn’t any bunching when the towel eventually gets laundered?

Anyway, enough rambling from me, enjoy the 4th of July weekend!  It’s one of my favorite holidays!  I <3 hot dogs and fireworks!

  1. Ohhh lots to keep you busy there! I am so pathetic, I have 5 boxes of flosses and I only use the same 4 or 5 over and over it seems like.

  2. 5 boxes of floss?! Wow, I’m working on filling up my 2nd ;) I think it’s natural for us stitches to build up an embroidery floss stash, it’s very comforting and reassuring to the supplies on hand, and of course very beautiful to look at since I have my floss sorted by color. I also tend to use the same ones over and over again, I have lots of green shades (and even bought a couple of more) but in my floss box I only use just a few ;)

  3. Great finds !!! Those colors are great…specially the dif. shades of browns and the pattern has a nice variety, I’m sure you will be able to wip one or two up in no time .. How nice that you will only need a yard !
I did take advantage of this sale also ! Wasn’t it great, floss on sale and and xtra 10% off .. yeah that’s what I’m talking about ! I also ran to Hancocks to get the Built by Wendy that I wanted ’cause it was only .99 c. .
I did saw a bit of the end of last night show. I was not that into it ’cause of the source of their inspiration. oh well !

That mouse pattern is really cute. Can’t wait to see it and can’t wait to see your handmade blue stripe towels…( I need to take a picture of my towels of the areas that bleed and upload it on flickr.)

About ribbon… when I use to make dd’s hairbows with polyester ribbon, I never pre wash any of the ribbons, and on some occasions I did washed an already made bow ’cause it got soiled and didn’t have a problem with it.
Just exercise some caution, in case that particular brand/color you are using bleeds.

  4. Yes, a Dutch girl must have blue stripes ;) Last week I made new bathroom curtains, and wanted to put ribbon across the bottom, I just took all the ribbon off the spool and threw it in the washer with the fabric. I figured it would be washed in the future, so I wanted to make sure it could take it, no problem, didn’t even need ironed when I took it out (that surprised me).

Yummy floss colors, and 1 yard skirt patterns are great, I love mine!

  5. oh dear, I think I accidentally cleared my comment while typing :(

@m1b, yes I bought those different shades of brown since the browns I already had were either too dark or too light. Now I have some nice in between shades ;)

And I’ll definitely prewash the amount of ribbon (plus alittle bit more) I’ll need in the sink as it would be a stitchy tragedy if the ribbon on the towel ended up bleeding after it was all stitched up and laundered.

And yes I was quite surprised at the source of their inspiration (tarot cards in case y’all didn’t see the show) and wasn’t too thrilled about it, but I still watched the show. Hopefully tonight’s source of inspiration won’t be so contraversial!

@lisa: yes I think I’m all set with my floss stash. After tonight’s bobbin winding and rearranging of my floss, I’ll have nearly 2 boxes full of yummy colors!

And I’m excited about my new pattern, the 1 yard of fabric is pretty sweet. And I’ve realized that since I’m slim and petite, that a couple of the skirt patterns I bought might not be too flattering on my figure because the skirts might be a bit too billowly with all the pleats and stuff. We’ll see, at least I have options ;)

  6. I have some standard floss colours I always want to have in my stash, like red, white and black. And I tend to buy lots of greens and blues but when I started on the Stitch Along I noticed I hardly had any browns, so I ordered lots of them recently. Still have to put them on their little cards though, that’s such a relaxing thing to do! I think I have about 100 different colours. Is that too much?

  7. 100 definitely isn’t way to much as i think i might have between 150 – 175 floss bobbins! i have one full floss box, and the other is nearly full ;)

i’m pretty happy with my floss selection now and hope i can say my floss collection is complete ;)
